• My review

  The author describes Alpha as a Black Woman/White Man Paranormal Romance. However, I’d personally call it a romance between a prisoner and an experimented-on super soldier, leaning more toward sci-fi than paranormal.

  I really love this book. It’s a masterpiece (I’m biased). In fact, I’m purposefully saving the second book in the series for when I’m desperate for a similar super-soldier story.

  Alpha incorporates some of my favorite romance elements:

  • An alpha male lead who’s fiercely protective.
  • Mysterious super soldiers who have been experimented on (I won’t say more to avoid spoilers!).
  • A romance that unfolds under captivity and experimentation.
  • A soft, loving heroine who’s insecure but relatable.

  Now, this book is not for everybody. It has captivity, control, torture, and sexual abuse themes. I usually avoid seeing the content warnings because they can be spoilerish, but I do include them in my reviews so you can check them out if you want more details.

  Romance & Main Characters

  I tagged this book as insta-love, but it’s more of an “insta-connection” romance and “instinct-driven chemistry plus survival mode” vibes.

  Don’t expect long, emotional conversations between Morgan and Alpha; their relationship grows from something more instinctive.

  • Morgan feels refreshingly average—in the best possible way. She makes me feel like anyone could find their own Alpha. She’s a bit more insecure than I usually prefer, but it fits the context of the story.
  • Alpha… oh, Alpha. It was so frustrating that the book is told entirely from Morgan’s point of view. I was dying to know what Alpha was thinking! He’s enigmatic yet straightforward—reminded me a little of Abraxas from Pheromone. He’s incredibly protective and laser-focused on Morgan, kind of like Fury with Ellie in Fury. And as the story progresses, we learn more about him.
