About the series
Fury is book #1 of the New Species series
Well, this is the first book of the series, so technically yes, but check the ending type above in case you want to avoid cliffhangers.
Book Blurb
Ellie is horrified to discover the pharmaceutical company she works for is doing illegal experiments. Company scientists have spliced human and animal DNA, creating exotic new species. One such “experiment” captures her heart and she’ll do anything to save him—even if he hates her for it.
Fury has never known compassion or love. He’s spent his life in a cell, chained and abused by humans. The one woman he allowed himself to trust betrayed him. Now he’s free and set on vengeance. He vows to end her life but when she’s finally in his grasp, harming her is the last thing he wants to do to the sexy little human.
Fury can’t resist Ellie—the touch of her hands, her mouth on his skin, her body wrapped around his. He’s obsessed with the scent of his woman. And Ellie wants Fury—always has. She craves his big, powerful body and wants to heal his desolate heart.
But loving Fury is one thing…taming him is another.

Rating & review
My review
Wow! Where to start?
Honestly, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read this book—it’s definitely in my personal hall of fame. I LOVE IT!
If you’re into stories filled with plenty of spicy, graphic scenes, featuring a super protective and jealous male lead who has some animal-like traits (think alpha from omegaverse stories, though this isn’t omegaverse), then do yourself a favor and read this book.
But first, do check out the content warnings. The story directly and indirectly deals with very serious topics like rape, human experimentation, and imprisonment. There are two short scenes: one with non-consent (Fury is drugged) and one with dubious consent (some would say non-consent) that might make some readers uncomfortable.
World-Building That Hooks You
The worldbuilding is spectacular. The entire “New Species” universe is incredibly well-crafted, and you quickly get a solid understanding of this world. I don’t want to say too much more to avoid spoilers.
Some readers say the enemy or bad guy is too one-dimensional, but personally, I kind of like that simplicity.
The balance between action and romance is fantastic. There are a couple of damsel-in-distress moments, and honestly, that’s right up my alley. The initial tension between the main characters is out of this world. Reading this book is pure joy for me.
Spice
And those spicy scenes—uff, they’re H.O.T.! Laurann Dohner writes the best smut, I swear. The scenes are frequent, sure, but I never felt like they took away from the story itself.
Characters
- Ellie: Determined and intelligent (a rare species, considering some of the latest books I’ve read), with definite caretaker vibes.
- Fury: Alpha, protective, extremely jealous, yet loving. As mentioned, he has some animal traits—like heightened smell, strength, and hearing—that remind me of a shapeshifter who can’t shift.
