  When I was searching for my next read, I wanted something dark omegaverse, preferably MM. Then I saw the cover, read the blurb, and said yes. And boy, did it deliver.

  The story

  Thorn Winters, our omega, decides to run in this winter hunt type of scene where alphas hunt for omegas to get out of dept. Cue the wife hunting vibes, so of course there are a lot of topics and content warnings related to consent. This is a dark story, with a lot of forced proximity and forced desire. That dynamic is a central part of the story.

  The world-building is really unique. This is sci-fi omegaverse, and let me tell you, I have read some sci-fi omegaverse that have been just awful. It’s like the alien part struggles too much with the omega part, but here it’s not like that. What makes this sci-fi is the world itself: it’s your typical omegaverse, but instead of living in a contemporary world, they live in a futuristic type of world. Shani handles this so, so well. It’s the first time I have read this mix of genres done right. We have a custom word for Christmas, for cell phones, futuristic weapons, all of that. And there’s something so enjoyable about a story where the author never actually explains what some of the words are, but by context you are able to understand. It’s just so fun, so, so fun.

  On one end we have Thorn Winters. He’s your typical omega: guarded, doesn’t really want to be vulnerable.

  And on the other hand, we have Baal. Think mafia boss: extremely alpha, jealous, obsessive, protective.

  Final thoughts

  There’s not much more I would add, mainly because I don’t want to spoil the book. I will say this author writes very good blurbs. I read it, it was exactly what I wanted, and the book ended up being exactly what the blurb promised.
