Rating & review
My review
I spent $4.99 on a 168-page book and it was only a 4-star read? I recommend Adopt a Vampire only if you have Kindle Unlimited—I genuinely do not suggest spending $5 on less than 200 pages unless it’s a mind-blowingly good read. And while this was cute and fun, it wasn’t that good.
That said: let’s move on from my rant.
This was a genuinely cute, entertaining read. It’s fast-paced because… well, 168 pages. Not much room for deeper conflict or slow development. The conflict is resolved quickly, the story moves fast, and everything stays very light—but within that space, I did really enjoy it.
It’s a found family romance through and through (as the title not-so-subtly hints). The tone is warm, bantery, earnest, and packed with Sherwood’s signature one-liners and puns. It’s the kind of book you breeze through with a smile.
Why it wasn’t 5 stars
- The price. $5 for such a short book is steep, especially when the story itself lands at a solid-but-not-amazing four stars. Sherwood tends to be pricier than other authors, but still—this one stung.
- Jesse felt part of the pack way too easily. I expected more resistance, more emotional conflict, or at least more tension before he’s embraced as part of the pack.
There’s a cameo from characters in another series I haven’t read, but I didn’t feel lost at all. The book cover does say “A Ross Young & Unholy Trifecta Crossover”…I just totally missed it.
Romance, Characters & Vibes
Sherwood writes great protagonists with inner monologues that are funny, charming, and very “them.”
Jesse is cute, nerdy, smart, and has that slightly chaotic-energy innocence that makes you want to wrap him in a blanket.
Barrett is not your typical bulky alpha. He’s more slender, composed, stern-but-sweet. He feels less traditionally alpha than other werewolf heroes, but he’s working with limited opportunities to show that side in such a short book. Still, he’s protective, caring, and grounded—and that earns him big brownie points. Also: fade-to-black spice (insert crying sounds). Not unusual for Sherwood, just emotionally painful for those of us who like our smexy bite-bite times on the page.
Overall: a quick, cute, low-stakes supernatural romance with found family themes and soft vibes. I enjoyed it!
