A.J. Sherwood is a relatively new author to me, but she’s already made an impression. Her books feel unlike anything I’ve read before: strong plots, tons of humor, and a touch of the fantastical. What stood out most is that she has a very distinct style—light, quirky, and fun—even without leaning heavily on romance.
I first read A Mage’s Guide to Human Familiars back in 2023 and rated it 4 stars. I don’t recall exactly why I didn’t give it 5, which is why I plan to reread and give it a proper RBM review. Then in 2025, I picked up Jon’s Downright Ridiculous Shooting Case, and the second I finished it, I knew I had to write this author review. That book was a solid 5-star read for me: entertaining mystery, engaging characters, and humor that hit perfectly.
