• My review

  I really struggled to finish this one. It’s erotica, and the central theme is what makes a good Dom versus a bad Dom in BDSM. Think less American Queen and more a typical MFM scene in a BDSM club, direct, uncomplicated, no seduction of the mind. I was not in the mood for it.

  This is the type of book you pick up when you want a simple plot, forced proximity, fast-falling feelings, and characters with emotional baggage on both sides. It’s a short read and, if that’s what you’re looking for on a given day, it delivers.

  The characters

  Fiona is the type of heroine who goes to therapy, ignores everything her therapist tells her, and has to learn everything the hard way. That can work. In her case, it just annoyed me. You’d have to genuinely like heroines who don’t take advice, do things their own way, and learn through their own mistakes. That’s the full extent of her character development here.

  The guys were fine. They were differentiated enough, one dealing with guilt over something in his past, the other with some kind of father stuff, but I honestly can’t remember which was which. Zero memorable. The story never grabbed me enough to make me care, and that carried over to them. There was plenty of spice, but it felt rushed, like being handed a quick snack when what you actually wanted was a proper meal.

  One thing I’ll flag directly: Fiona hides things from her love interests multiple times because of her trauma, and in a BDSM context, that’s not just a character flaw, it’s a problem. BDSM is built on honesty and communication, and watching her undermine that repeatedly was a genuine issue for me, not just a pet peeve.

  Final thoughts

  If you like this type of book, it’s a perfectly enjoyable short read. If you’re sensitive to guilt-driven backstories or you can’t stand when characters lie to their love interests, skip it. It wasn’t for me, but I can see who it’s for.
