Rating & review
My review
This is one of those books that, on paper, should have been perfect for me—but in reality, it wasn’t.
If you love romances with millionaire MMCs, age gap (38M, 36M, 34M, 24F), plenty of smut featuring unconventional kinks, an FMC who fits seamlessly into the group, shocking reveals about her past, and angst fueled by miscommunication, then this book might be exactly your vibe.
What I Enjoyed
The chemistry between the characters was fantastic, and the smut was top-notch. I loved how the MMC group was already established before she joined them—it’s rare to find poly romances with that dynamic.
The spicy scenes? 🔥 Dirty, full of kinks, very graphic, frequent, and well written. The much-talked-about betrayal + epic grovel (mentioned in the blurb) also worked for me. Normally I dislike when lack of communication drives the conflict, but here it felt intentional and well executed. Could the grovel have been stronger? Sure. But the betrayal added intensity and made the story hit harder.
Why Only 3 Stars?
Two main reasons, each costing one star:
- The “Dark Romance” Label
This book is marketed as “A Dark Why Choose Romance.” And while it had some dark elements, I don’t consider it a dark romance.
One MMC has a controversial kink, and the FMC has a traumatic past. But to me, dark romance means the romance itself is morally questionable—bullying, manipulation, blurred consent—not just that characters have dark backstories or edgy kinks.
So while I get why many readers classify it as a dark romance, it didn’t meet my personal definition. To me this is dark, but not a dark romance. - Too Many Tropes at Once
At one point, the story takes a big turn connected to the FMC’s past, and that lost me. Personally, I don’t enjoy when too many tropes pile up unless the book is long enough to develop them all. Here we already had:
- Millionaire romance
- Why choose / poly setup
- Unconventional kinks
- Age gap
Adding another dramatic reveal made it feel more like a checklist than organic storytelling. Worse, the conflict from this reveal was resolved almost instantly—probably because the book already had so many things going on. Most Goodreads reviewers didn’t seem to mind, but for me, it weakened the overall story.
✅ The highlights: amazing chemistry, dirty-hot smut, and a rare poly dynamic done right.
❌ The misses (for me): mislabeling as dark romance and trope overload. This is one of those books that, on paper, should have been perfect for me—but in reality, it wasn’t.
