About the series
Slade is book #2 of the New Species series
Depends, in my opinion, this book spoils earlier books in the series, and that’s a deal breaker for me, but it might not be for you.
Book Blurb
Book 2 in the New Species series. The books can be read as stand-alone stories, but it is advisable to read them in order to get the most enjoyment from the series.
Dr. Trisha Norbit is flat on her back in a hospital bed, pinned under a really big New Species male. Though drugged out of his mind, he promises her ecstasy and is determined to deliver—but hospital staff intervenes. 215 is a man Trisha will never forget. But, when she meets him again at Homeland…he doesn’t even remember her!
The nosy new doctor wants to know all about the breeding habits between humans and Species. Slade proposes a hands-on education but she’s not interested in a one-night stand. He can’t offer more because he’s haunted by the memory of a woman he once tried to claim. He’s shocked when he realizes they are one and the same. He’s blown it—she’ll never give him a chance now.
But, when her life is in danger, he’s the only one who can save her. As they flee through the wilderness, their desire ignites and cannot be denied. Hot sex, on the run, has consequences that are even more dangerous and will change their lives forever.
Reader Advisory: There is a scene of an attempted rape.

Rating & review
My review
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve reread this book. It has so many of my favorite story elements: a good plot, an element of danger (with damsel-in-distress moments), a sexy protector, and knots (uff, haha).
About the series
This book is a perfect follow-up to Fury (book #1). I think it could be read as a standalone, but I definitely do NOT recommend it. It would spoil a lot from the first book, and I’m not sure you can fully appreciate the world-building without the details introduced there.Plot and Romance
This series is just too, too good! We continue with the same enemy from book one, and we learn more about the NSO (New Species Organization) and the unique qualities of the New Species. Slade is about 60% romance and 40% plot, but the story intertwines beautifully with the romantic elements. Plus, it’s spicy—very spicy. The spicy scenes changed me, haha. I’m not 100% sure, but I think this might have been the first book I read describing knots. I’ve never been the same since. There’s something almost raw about how Laurann Dohner writes romance—everything feels raw, intense, and fast-paced. Right up my alley!
Characters
- Trisha: Intelligent (how sexy is that in a protagonist, right? No “TSTL” or “too stupid to live” moments here), passionate, determined, brave.
- Slade: Protective, resourceful, intelligent, a bit insecure (I found it endearing), tough-guy vibes.
Verdict and Content Warning
Highly recommended! However, as the author mentions in the blurb, there is an attempted rape scene. Usually, I leave these in content warnings so readers can decide for themselves, but I think this one is worth mentioning explicitly here.I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve reread this book.
