Book Review: Radiance
Book details
About the story
Wholesome MF fantasy romance (arranged marriage, interspecies/“alien” vibes): A human noblewoman is married off to a non-human spare prince for political peace, and their “we’re hideous to each other” match turns into a funny, tender, medium-burn friends-to-lovers bond with strong world building, low plot, and emotion-first intimacy.

Rating & review
My review
Radiance is one of those romance-centered stories with gorgeous writing and characters.
This is a fantasy medium-burn romance with cozy energy. The story has solid character development (we really get to know the main characters) and immersive world building.
What the story is about (Plot & World)
“With the gift of privilege came the burden of expectation.”
The setup is simple: this is an arranged marriage between two different species—humans (Gauri) and the Kai—who genuinely find each other horrendous at first. Not in a “secretly hot” way. In a my eyes are offended way. There’s honesty, humor, and a surprising amount of emotional maturity.
“You might have a face to turn my hair white, but your honesty is handsome.”
Brishen is a spare prince with no real ambition for power, and Ildiko is a noblewoman whose “worth” has always been tied to being useful to her family.
Their marriage is duty on paper… but the book is mostly about what happens after the wedding: Ildiko adjusting to a new culture.
If you’re looking for a plot-heavy fantasy, this isn’t that. The heart of Radiance is the relationship and the day-to-day unfolding of trust.
At the end of this book is easy to see that book 2 will be a continuation of their story.
Romance, Characters, and Why It Works
This romance is ridiculously easy to like.
From the start, Brishen and Ildiko have chemistry— the kind rooted in friendship first. They’re funny together and they communicate (shocking I know).
Ildiko is a beauty by human standards and court-smart enough to understand power dynamics.
Brishen is the honorable warrior type—strong, capable, and quietly sweet. Don’t expect heavy alpha vibes from him.
They’re both likable, and the romance reflects that: it’s warm, supportive, and emotionally centered.
Spice Level
Low-to-moderate. There are one or two very good scenes, but spice is absolutely not the foundation of this relationship. This is “feelings first” romance—connection, loyalty, tenderness, trust.
If you prefer your fantasy romance with more heat, more tension, more morally gray chaos… you might end up feeling like I did: I enjoyed it a lot, but I wanted a touch more intensity. And that’s not a flaw so much as a mood thing.
