Rating & review
My review
Fun fact: I came to this book thanks to ChatGPT, and for me it was just okay—a solid 3-star read.
I’d been on a bad reading streak and needed one good book. I tried everything—Goodreads, Romance.io, Reddit—until it occurred to me to use GPT. Never again; I spent more time arguing with the AI about what I wanted than reading the reviews it spat out.
What I wanted vs. what I got
-
Wanted: fated mates, paranormal romance, shapeshifters, plus an alpha-male hero.
-
Delivered: the first three, yes. The alpha vibe? Not really.
Something was missing. I found parts boring, even though this story should have been a hit for me.
The book came out in 2009, and maybe it’s the era or the author’s style, but it uses those almost-comic terms for intimate parts—eye-rollers like “molten chamber” for Samantha’s lady bits.
Story & Characters
I did want something predictable to clear my head, and the plot definitely is. But the romance itself isn’t special; I’ve read similar stories that land better.
-
Malcolm: Average hero, a little lost about how to win Samantha over. Caring, sure, but not alpha. Insta-love on his side, no doubt.
-
Samantha: Typical “she’s different but doesn’t know why” heroine. I liked her profession and background, yet nothing really stood out.
Bottom line
If you need a mind-clearing, predictable story with uncomplicated characters, this book will do. I rated it three stars: it ticked the boxes I wanted, but I still felt bored.

Who will love this book
Unleashed is perfect for readers who enjoy:
• Paranormal romance with dream-walkers and shapeshifters
• The fated mates trope
• Predictable plots that don’t demand much emotional investment
• Classic early-2000s romance writing (including some cringey euphemisms)
• A caring—but not quite alpha—male lead
