Alex Volkov is a devil blessed with the face of an angel and cursed with a past he can’t escape.
Driven by a tragedy that has haunted him for most of his life, his ruthless pursuits for success and vengeance leave little room for matters of the heart.
But when he’s forced to look after his best friend’s sister, he starts to feel something in his chest: A crack. A melt. A fire that could end his world as he knew it.
***
Ava Chen is a free spirit trapped by nightmares of a childhood she can’t remember.
But despite her broken past, she’s never stopped seeing the beauty in the world…including the heart beneath the icy exterior of a man she shouldn’t want.
Her brother’s best friend. Her neighbor. Her savior and her downfall.
Theirs is a love that was never supposed to happen – but when it does, it unleashes secrets that could destroy them both… and everything they hold dear.

Rating & review
My review
This is one of those books I would’ve liked a lot more if I’d read it in my early twenties. At 28, a character like Alex doesn’t seem as sexy anymore. He’s too perfect and mysterious at the beginning, making it hard for me to believe someone like him could actually exist.
I really enjoyed the couple’s dynamic in the first half of the book, but I think it didn’t blend very well with Alex’s revenge-driven storyline.
It’s a classic New Adult story, the spicy scenes were hot, not quite top-20-worthy for me, but definitely hot.
Although I’ve categorized it as a “dark romance” here (and many sites do classify it that way), I didn’t find it particularly “dark.” To me, the scenes felt more action-driven and intriguing than genuinely dark.
About the content warnings (worth mentioning since many consider this to be a “dark” romance): if you are easily triggered by heavier topics, then I recommend you take a look at the content warnings above. Again, this story wasn’t too intense or dark for me, but I’m not easily triggered.
Did I enjoy it? Yes, it was entertaining. But I probably would’ve loved it if I’d read it a few years earlier.
